My take
I clapped. I do this more than most people (Alejandra sometimes elbows me when I'm the only one in the theater clapping haha). But I wasn't the only one in this theater because the ending was so perfect and moving. It felt primarily right. There was something about our curiosity our longing to not be alone in the universe coupled with a suspicion that there's enough in our universe, in our country, in our community that is unexplained or even unexplainable. It felt right. The disclosure and the clips cutting out to the good folks at 30 rock controlling was just so emotional. And Blunt's closing "Listen" was just so good. A bit cheesy, but perfect in the moment. The local news importance was great. Here are a few other things I loved: (a) Emily Blunt's overall performance. Here dialogue was natural and delivered phenomenally. Her back and forth possessed performance was completely believable in a very unique, unthreatening way. (b) Blunt's relationship with her boyfriend was also hilarious and completely relatable as a real couple. (c) The cinematography was so relatable to close encounters, which was really fun to see (see final comment below). (d) John Williams for the win again. Now here are a few things that didn't go so well which is what pulled my overall rating down to a 7 despite having a blast on the whole. (i) outside of Blunt alone and with her boyfriend, the dialogue felt forced and stilted. (ii) the Jane/Daniel relationship didn't feel believable or real and their dialogue in particular felt forced and even beyond their dialogue their individual stories were only half developed, (iii) I didn't love the religious stuff, which felt a bit shallow, with the one exception of the woman trying to worship Blunt at the end, which I thought was great, (iv) the tech sticks never explained even superficially. (v) most of the other characters felt a bit half baked as well. Final comment on the movie - I just have to say whenever I have a chance to "do the homework" I'm going to. Having watched all of 2001 A Space Odyssey and half (kids are unforgiving on wakeup time so we had to stop halfway but will finish tonight) of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, it was just so fun to see so much of those movies here. To situate a movie not just standing on its own but standing on the shoulders of giants that came before, whether made by Spielberg or not. I'm so young in my journey, but this was blast and I hope to treat as many new movies I watch as projects like this.
